A Story About Gratitude and Gratefulness

A GOOD SAMARITAN

I live in the capital of British Columbia - Victoria, where the temperature has an average daily high and low that are about 8 and 4 degree Celsius, respectively (from what I experienced). Summer days are relatively mild compared to other city in Canada with an average of low and high temperatures which is about 11 to 20 degree Celsius, respectively. Victoria has the perfect weather (at least for me). No city in the British Columbia or any provinces in the country comes close to my city (I think no one will argue on this - I am happy to share a separate and a dedicated article more about Victoria (wink).

It was a winter season. Such an unusual snowfall hit my city back in February 2021. I woke up early morning of Sunday, a week before the Valentine's Day to drive for my younger sister to work. It was a snow bright day. With probably about 2 to 3 feet tall of snow is on the driveway which is relatively unusual on my area. Many parts of the country have already walloped with snow storms. Me and the rest of my family shovelled our driveway and some part of the road close to our driveway. I started the engine while we shovel the snow. It took us around an hour before we left the house. Unluckily, one of our recently bought shovel was broken, such a perfect timing. The ice was still thick and snow is still falling but we have to keep moving. My mini van was covered with snow as it was parked outside. So imperatively, we cleared the snow and ice off the windows and roof of my vehicle. So it took more time.

Surely, snow season is fun for kids, but those who are driving can be very dangerous. If you have proper techniques, right car accessories and experienced in driving during this season, that would be very helpful, not that I don't have those. As I drove towards my sister's workplace, I was very careful and a bit nervous, you'll never know what's going to happen next. It wasn't my first time but on a snow weather, tires might have a less grip. Numbers of cars are on the road. Front line workers and others. I came across a news a day before, where couple of accidents happened in a nearby city where cars were jammed on the snow. Good thing no one was reported hurt fortunately. On our way, we had a quick stop at the drive thru of the nearest coffee shop in our town to get our favourite french vanilla coffee to warm us up. As anticipated, few cars were at the drive thru. Afterwards, we continue driving safely. We drove slow as we head towards the destination. Moreover, we arrived safely.

Subsequently, after dropping off my sister to work, on my trip back home that's where the icy challenge comes into picture. Our place is located in a bit steep location. Climbing in a steep hill and turning into the road about fifteen metres from our driveway was such an obstacle considering the height of the snow. Pile of snow blocked my way and I've got stuck. My vehicle didn't moved at all and my tire kept on spinning. I immediately turned my hazard lights on and phoned my mum so she can help me clear the road. Mum's are amazing. We dig the snow out in the front, underneath and in the back of my vehicle. Cleared the path for wheels so I can move and therefore provide that much of space on either end of the car. My car moved a little bit but I've got stuck again as I moved further. As I checked, thankfully, no cars were behind me. Exasperating as it was, my mum and I were so frustrated and tired. We hadn't had our breakfast yet. It was I think around past seven in the morning already and my vehicle was still in the middle of the road just few meters away from our driveway.

Wishful thinking that somehow someone would popped out, well not magically appear you know cause it would be scary, I mean you know what I meant. Been praying for help. Surprisingly, someone from up the hill showed up and started walking towards us. As he approached us, he offered some help. I responded certainly. The moment he reached us he then offered pushing my car as an easy solution yet it didn't worked out. After then, he volunteered his snow chain so he went back to his house to get them. We put a chain to my tires but still didn't worked. Later on, that helpful guy offered to help us to shovel the ice on the road to clear the path. At last, I was able to pull my vehicle into our driveway. From a distance, I waived my hand to express my gratitude. He quickly packed up his chains and shovel as it was snowing constantly. I made my voice a little louder so he can hear me. That's when I offered him a breakfast and hot drinks but he politely decline as he walked away.

We were so thankful and grateful to this young man. We didn't get chance to introduce ourselves. That complete stranger helped us without delay and without asking us in return. I can't describe how much that help meant to us. I will forever cherish that generous act. He has such a good heart. May God richly bless him. I really value the help he offered. He has a pure heart of gold. It was a heartwarming to received such help. I thank the Lord for sending us this guy for not leaving us out in the cold when we needed help. He did whatever it took to make sure we had been helped and safe. I am eternally grateful. I also prayed to the Lord for keeping us safe. With a thankful heart for surrounding us with people who are always ready to look out for us.

This reminds me of this wonderful bible verse that I would love to share with you. And you too as well would love this.. It's from the Book of Psalms 121:7-8.

The LORD will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.
