A Story About Measuring One's Success

AN ACCURATE MEASURING CUP

If someone were to ask you how would you measure your height. What simple device would  you have in mind? As well, if you are to describe it, what would that be? Maybe you would I bet you would say – a simple measuring tape. Obviously you would be able to provide a quick definition! You would nail it!

Say, what's that first thing in your mind when you were ask how you would track your body weight? Did someone say weighing scale with a detailed definition? - You got it!

And when you were ask what device measures body temperature? - Yes! A thermometer. And again you perfectly illustrate what that is.

Now, when someone ask you what is that instrument you could use to measure voltage? A Voltmeter! Some might have guessed it right the first time specially if you studied or work in the electrical trades or in the engineering field or something related to that area. If you're clueless, google is just a click away.

If you would name an instrument that is use for measuring a blood pressure, what would that be? Sphygmomanometer. Oh right, the question is getting tougher and tougher now eh. Maybe we can call a friend again who can precisely gave us a certain answer.

You absolutely have something in mind already when prompted with these basic questions. Perhaps, the answer is pretty much the same at all times. I bet, if this was a real quiz bee contest you would probably do exceptionally well. It could be that they were common devices used in a daily basis. Possibly, Google has aided you find the more accurate answer. That's why you responded quiet instantaneous.

Congratulations! Moving on..

What if someone ask you this - HOW WOULD YOU MEASURE AND DEFINE SUCCESS?......

Not that you are clueless but I bet there could have a long pause there. Right? You did checked your college textbooks and it was not even there. You might have asked your parents and they have their own distinct answers. You might have searched it through a search engine like google, yet it was telling you something else. One research suggests this and that. The other one implies a different version.

Here are some of the conversations with the people I came across with where I always had a chance to have meaningful connections. Achievements and success stories would always be a part of the talk.

  1. From a senior couple on their 80's here's what they said. - "It's when you happily had a degree and you've got a good grades and finally hired in a high paying professions after graduating in college and there you go, you are a successful."

  1. Similar to my friend's cousin, she describes success this way - "Well part of my success story is when I had finished with a dual masters degree where years after I've got my doctorate degree and I'm happy that I am now employed at a University Research Centre."

  1. A friend I met at a career seminar shared - "I got pregnant when I was young but I was able to happily manage to start my own business. My own company is now expanding and ready for franchise."

  2. One of my churchmate's friend say - "I am a single mum with a baby boy happily living in my recently bought property and it's a beautiful 7 bedroom house with a low rate mortgage, renting out the basement as a source of income."

  3. On a webinar, one of the speaker and a friend of mine mentions - "As a part time Business Consultant of the ABC Tech Corporation (I couldn't name the business) I am so happy for the contribution I was giving the team to help improve the companies' operations."

  4. A note from a friend from a networking group notes that - "I've been happily  married for 10 years with 2 kids and another on the way, I am stay-at-home dad and my wife is doctor."

  5. A previous client describes his success as - "I am self employed lawyer happily running a family law business."

  6. A long time friend describes their idea of success as - "We are a happily married couple. We sold our 35 year old accounting firm. We now lived in a cottage for the rest of our retirement days enjoying our moments together with our 5 year old golden retriever."

  7. A long time travel partners whom I met years ago defines success as - "Having a recreational vehicle and to happily travel anywhere and anytime for the rest of their lives is what how we define success, we waited for this opportunity for a very long time."

  8. A close friend once said – "Well, for me waking up in the morning everyday is my simple definition of success and a blessings combined. He went on and said, some people fights for their life to survive. I have no complaints. I am happy with my life."

  9. I cancer survivor that I met emphasized – "When there where no more chemotherapies. Learning that I am sort of a cancer free now is a huge success. Being happily alive was such a great one."

Looking at the above few definitions, one could conclude that Success can be viewed as very be subjective in nature and broad topic to talk about. Apparently, it can be define based on individuals's perception in innumerable ways. It is fair to say that no single definition can best describes the word success. There would be no exact definition of success that are the same. Considerably how much more if one has to measure it.

Might as well, enjoy the ride and have some fun.

This reminds me of this wonderful bible verse that I would love to share with you. And you too as well would love this. It's a verse from the Book Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 NIV reminding us to stay happy and be very happy on the journey of life.

“I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God.”

Hope this article brought you another positive perception in life as you move forward on you unique and amazing journey. I do believe that everyone has their own definition of success. But what matters the most is how much we enjoy the journey and that we are happy at the end your chosen venture.
